How to Build an eCommerce Store Using Shopify

I’ve been developing eCommerce stores since 2000 as a freelancer. Back in the days, we didn’t have the resources that are currently available. You sit with the client for a briefing session, discuss the entire flow of the store, the design elements, design the all so crucial database (unique fields… man, I’m ancient!), and a whole lot more. And mind you, all these steps cumulatively takes at least 15 to 20 days. And not to mention, you further create a site map or a working flow diagram where more iterations are bound to happen. The earliest you can complete this design phase (working flow) is nothing less than 30 days. (Ready to build your eCommerce store using Shopify? You could even start off with a 14-day trial period)

And then starts the development phase. Which again, is nothing less than 60 days going all the way to 120 days. QC (Quality check/control), Integration with shipping vendors (logistics partners) and the payment gateway, all adds up to your timeframe. So by the time you are ready to launch your eCommerce store, we have used up a good 150 – 180 days! And yes, to top it all, you would have spent a bomb to get this all developed.

Fast forward to today (2019), and you get to create your eCommerce store with no developers in just 15 minutes flat! WOW! No kidding.

And while we do have various options in the market, e.g., WooCommerce, BigCommerce, and a whole lot of opensource codes, I particularly recommend Shopify. And just as Shopify mentions it on their website, I too vouch for Shopify is Fast, Reliable and Responsive. It’s no surprise that for this very reason Shopify is trusted by 8,00,000 businesses worldwide.

So, do I still get into what Shopify is?

Anyways, Shopify is a complete commerce platform that lets you start, grow, and manage a business. Create and customize an online store, sell in multiple places, including web, mobile, social media, online marketplaces, brick-and-mortar locations, and pop-up shops. Manage products, inventory, payments, and shipping.

Shopify is completely cloud-based and hosted, which means you don’t have to worry about upgrading or maintaining software or web servers. This gives you the flexibility to access and run your business from anywhere with an internet connection.

There are a number of reasons I choose to build an eCommerce store using Shopify.

  1. It’s very affordable
  2. 70+ professional themes. With themes created by world-renowned designers like Happy Cog, Clearleft, and Pixel Union, you’ll love how your website looks on Shopify.

  4. Mobile commerce ready. Your online Shopify store includes a built-in mobile commerce shopping cart. Your customers can browse and buy from your store using any mobile phone or tablet.
  5. Web-based website builder. Host your entire website on Shopify. Your online store comes with a full-featured content management system.
  6. Free SSL certificate. Every Shopify store includes a free 256-bit SSL certificate. All pages, content, credit card, and transaction information is protected by the same level of security used by banks.
  7. 100 payment gateways. From bitcoin to PayPal to iDEAL, Shopify integrates with over 100 external payment gateways from around the world.
  8. Abandoned checkout recovery. Recover lost sales by automatically sending an email to prospective customers with a link to their abandoned shopping carts, encouraging them to complete their purchase.
  9. Multiple languages. Your online store checkout comes in 50+ languages, and you can always translate your store’s theme to suit your needs.
  10. Dropshipping Shopify integrates with apps like Ordoro, Inventory Source, and eCommHub, making it easy to set up your dropshipping business.
  11. Manage on the go Use the Shopify app on your smartphone to update your store, manage inventory, fulfill orders, and contact a customer.
  12. Search engine optimized. Help potential customers find your store using search engines. Shopify supports SEO best practices like customizable H1, title, and meta tags.
  13. Gift cards. Your customers are able to purchase a gift card for someone from your store, or you can use gift cards as store credit.
  14. Social media integration All Shopify websites include social media integration, such as Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr.

  17. Unlimited products There’s no limit to the number or type of products you can sell in your online store.
  18. Shopify is built by eCommerce entrepreneurs for eCommerce entrepreneurs. It’s built-in a very user-friendly manner which allows you to concentrate on your core business, i.e., managing your store, your products, your sales, while the system takes care of all the back-end & shopping experience.
  19. Unlimited bandwidth. Shopify is a hosted solution. They take care of the servers, hostings, security, backups, coding, etc. There is absolutely no need for you to know any coding. You’ll never be charged based on the number of visitors or traffic to your store.
  20. Google Analytics. Google Analytics works with your online store, so you can track sales, visits, and referrals.
  21. Mobile dashboard Quickly see items that need your attention and track trends in your business. Add products, take a product photo, change a price, or manage inventory – all from your phone.
  22. Scalability. We may start with only one product and gradually over the course of time, scale to probably 1000’s of products. You wouldn’t want to re-create or re-develop your store at that point in time. Or even worse, you wouldn’t want your eCommerce store crashing down due to the traffic on your biggest discount sale day. Shopify gives you that scalability.
  23. Integrations. Shopify allows you to integrate your store with Facebook, Amazon, Pinterest, Twitter, and a whole lot of integration partners.
  24. 24/7 Support. Dedicated support team. The Shopify support team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by email, live chat, and phone.
  25. Amazing Tutorials. Find commonly asked questions, user guides, and tutorials in the Shopify Help Center. Everything you need to know about selling online. You’ll find ebooks, video series, webinars, and much more.
