What it is
Ahrefs is an SEO platform built around the best backlink index in the industry, with keyword research, rank tracking, site audit and content exploration alongside it.
Where Semrush is broad, Ahrefs is deep. Its crawler is enormous, its link data is the most trusted in the field, and its interface is the most pleasant of the major tools to spend a day in.
I use it when link analysis is the job: understanding why a competitor outranks us, finding who links to them, judging whether a site is worth a guest post.
What it does
Site Explorer is the core: any domain's backlinks, referring domains, anchor text, top pages and traffic estimates. The data quality here is the reason people pay.
Content Explorer searches a huge index of pages by topic and performance, which is the best way I know to find what has actually earned links in a subject.
Keywords Explorer gives volume, difficulty and clicks data, with the useful distinction between searches and actual clicks.
Site Audit and Rank Tracker cover the standard ground competently. Their free Webmaster Tools gives you audit and backlink data for your own verified site, which is a genuinely useful free offering.

My verdict
Ahrefs has the best link data and the best interface, and those two things matter more than a long feature list if your work involves understanding why competitors rank.
Against Semrush the choice is genuinely close. I would take Semrush for breadth and content planning, and Ahrefs for link analysis and research depth, and either alone would be sufficient for most businesses.
Their free Webmaster Tools deserves more attention than it gets: audit and backlink data for your own verified site, at no cost. If you only need to understand your own site, start there.

I earn nothing from this recommendation. There is no affiliate link on this page and I pay for my own subscription where one is needed. When a review on this site does carry a commercial link, it says so in this same place on the page.
