Astra

★★★★

Popular for good reason, though the starter templates pull in more plugins than most sites need.

BEST FOR
Fast general-purpose WordPress sites built from template starters

What it is

Astra is one of the most widely used WordPress themes: light, fast, and designed to work with both the block editor and the major page builders.

Its distinguishing feature is the starter template library, which imports a complete designed site you then edit, rather than starting from an empty theme.

It is a sound default choice, and the templates are where people get into trouble.

What it does

The theme itself is genuinely light. On a clean install with core blocks, page weight from the theme is small and performance is good.

Starter templates import a finished-looking site in a few clicks, which is the fastest route from nothing to something presentable.

Astra Pro adds header and footer builders, more layout control, and site-wide typography and spacing settings.

The catch is that most starter templates require Elementor or another builder plus several plugins to look like the demo. Import one and a light theme becomes a moderately heavy site.

Who it's for

01People building a site quickly from a designed starting point.
02Agencies producing many similar sites.
03Users of Elementor or Beaver Builder wanting a compatible base.
04Anyone wanting a well-supported, widely documented theme.
05Sites needing WooCommerce layouts out of the box.

Pricing

PLAN WHAT YOU GET WORTH IT FOR
Free Core theme with basic customiser options. Simple sites with the block editor.
Astra Pro Header and footer builders, full layout control. Anyone doing custom design work.
Essential or Growth bundles Pro plus their plugins and template access. Agencies building several sites.
Lifetime options One-off payment for the bundle. Worth it if you build sites regularly.

The free version covers a lot. Pro is worth it when you find yourself installing plugins to do things Pro already does.

MY RECOMMENDED PLAN

Free version first, on the block editor. Astra Pro or the bundle only if you build several sites a year.

Alternatives

GeneratePress
Lighter and cleaner, with fewer templates. My pick for content sites.
Kadence
Better free tier for header and footer control. My usual client recommendation.
Blocksy
Comparable free feature set with strong typography controls.
A core block theme
Nothing to buy and nothing to leave behind.

My verdict

Astra is a good theme with a tempting trap attached. The base theme is light and well built, and the starter templates that make it attractive are what make sites slow.

If you use it with the block editor and set your own typography and colours, you have a fast, well-supported site. If you import a template that needs Elementor and six plugins, you have something else.

For a content-heavy site I would take GeneratePress; for a client site I would take Kadence for the free header builder. Astra is the right answer if the template library is what you actually want.
