What it is

ChatGPT is an AI assistant you use in a chat window, a mobile app, or through an API. You type or speak a request and it responds with text, images, data analysis or code.

It is the most widely used tool of its kind, which matters practically: every tutorial, integration and workflow guide assumes it, and most other software that has added AI features has built them on the same underlying models.

I have paid for it continuously for over two years alongside Claude, and I use them for different jobs.

What it does

The breadth is the point. In a normal week I use it for research framing, brainstorming, image generation for internal mockups, spreadsheet formulas, quick data analysis on a CSV, and turning rough notes into something structured.

Custom instructions and projects let you set context once so you stop re-explaining your business in every conversation. That is the feature most people never configure and the one that most improves the output.

Data analysis is genuinely strong. You can upload a spreadsheet and ask questions about it in plain English, and for a small business that removes a real skills barrier.

Where it is weakest is finished prose. It writes fluently and generically, and it drifts back to its own voice over a long piece however detailed your brief.

MY RECOMMENDED PLAN

The individual paid tier if you work alone, or the Business tier the moment client data is involved, because that is the plan where your inputs are excluded from training. Do not pay for the API unless you are building something.

Alternatives

Claude
Pick it if your work is words and documents. It writes closer to a finished draft and holds a long brief better.
Perplexity
Pick it when the job is research you will have to defend. It gives you sources rather than an answer.
Gemini
Pick it if your work already lives in Google Docs, Sheets and Gmail.
A local open-weights model
Pick it when data cannot leave your machine. You trade quality and convenience for control.

My verdict

ChatGPT is the safest single AI subscription for a small business, because breadth beats depth when you only have one. It is not the best writer of the group and it is the most capable all-rounder, and for most people that is the more useful property.

What changed my use of it was configuring custom instructions properly and building three custom GPTs for jobs I do weekly. Unconfigured, it is a clever chat window. Configured, it removes a few hours a week.

If you write for a living, pair it with Claude and use each for what it is good at. If you do not, this alone covers almost everything.
