What it is
Gemini is Google's AI assistant, available as a standalone chat tool and, more usefully, embedded across Google Workspace: Docs, Sheets, Gmail, Drive and Meet.
The standalone product competes directly with ChatGPT and Claude. The embedded version competes with nothing, because no other assistant sits inside your documents and mailbox by default.
That distinction is the whole review. Judged as a chat tool it is good but not my first choice. Judged as a Workspace feature it is genuinely useful.
What it does
In Docs it drafts and rewrites in place. In Sheets it generates formulas and explains what a sheet is doing. In Gmail it drafts replies and summarises long threads. In Drive it answers questions about files without you opening them.
The Drive integration is the one I find most valuable: asking a question about a folder of documents and getting an answer with references to which file it came from.
Standalone, it handles very long context well and is strong at research and summarising. Its writing is competent and slightly less controlled than Claude's over a long brief.
Where it frustrates is consistency. Output quality varies more between sessions than its rivals, and the model and tier naming changes so often that keeping track is a small job in itself.

| PLAN | WHAT YOU GET | WORTH IT FOR |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Standalone chat access with limits. | Trying it before committing. |
| Consumer paid tier | Higher limits, newest models, extra storage. | Individuals not on Workspace. |
| Workspace business plans | Gemini features across Docs, Sheets, Gmail and Drive. | Any team already on Workspace. |
| API via Google Cloud | Pay per token for your own applications. | Developers building products. |
Google bundles and unbundles these features frequently. Check what your existing Workspace plan already includes before paying for anything separate.
Whatever is already included in your Workspace plan. Check that first, because businesses regularly pay for a separate AI subscription while having the features bundled in a plan they already own.

My verdict
Gemini is a good assistant in a very good position. If your business runs on Google Workspace, the embedded version saves real time on work you were doing anyway, and you may already be paying for it.
As a standalone chat tool I would choose ChatGPT for breadth or Claude for writing. The reason to use Gemini is that it is already where your work is, and that convenience is worth more than a marginal quality difference for most everyday tasks.
Check your Workspace plan before you buy anything. That is the single most useful action in this review.
