GeneratePress

★★★★★

The lightest serious theme I know. Deliberately plain out of the box, which is the point.

BEST FOR
Content-heavy sites where speed is the priority

What it is

GeneratePress is a deliberately minimal WordPress theme built for performance. The base theme ships a very small amount of CSS and JavaScript, and you add only what you need.

It has no starter template that imports twelve plugins, because that is not what it is for. It gives you an extremely fast, well-structured foundation and expects you to make the design decisions.

It is what I use on content sites, and GP Premium is the single best value theme purchase I have made in WordPress.

What it does

The base theme handles typography, layout and structure with a very light footprint, and it is well coded enough that developers respect it, which is not true of most commercial themes.

GP Premium adds modules you enable individually: typography, colours, spacing, a site library, a header builder, WooCommerce support. Enable three and you carry the weight of three, not thirty.

Hook and element controls let you insert content anywhere in the template without editing files, which replaces a category of plugins.

What it does not give you is a designed look. Out of the box it is plain, and if you have no design input, it will stay plain.

Who it's for

01Bloggers and publishers where speed and readability matter.
02Developers who want a clean foundation to build on.
03Anyone chasing good Core Web Vitals scores.
04People who prefer adding features to removing them.
05Sites that will live for years and need maintainability.

Features

Minimal CSS and JavaScript on the front end.
Modular premium features
Enable only the modules you use.
Hooks and elements
Insert content anywhere without editing template files.
Excellent typography control
Granular control over every text element.

Optional starter designs, without heavy dependencies.

Respected by developers, which matters for maintenance.

Pros and cons

PROS
Fastest theme in general use.
Modular, so you carry only what you enable.
Excellent typography and hook controls.
Superb documentation and support forum.
One licence covers unlimited sites.
CONS
Plain by default; needs design input.
Fewer ready-made templates than rivals.
Best features require GP Premium.
Not aimed at people who want a demo imported.
Less visual hand-holding than Kadence.

Pricing

PLAN WHAT YOU GET WORTH IT FOR
Free Base theme with customiser options. Simple, fast sites with core blocks.
GP Premium annual All modules, site library, unlimited sites. Anyone building more than one site.
GP Premium lifetime One-off payment, permanent access. The version I would buy.
Support Included with Premium, and unusually good. Worth factoring in.

One licence covers unlimited sites, which makes it dramatically cheaper than per-site theme licensing if you build regularly.

MY RECOMMENDED PLAN

GP Premium, ideally the lifetime option. It is the best value purchase in the WordPress theme market and it covers every site you will ever build.

Alternatives

Kadence
More visual control on the free tier, slightly heavier. Better for non-technical users.
Blocksy
Similar philosophy with a more generous free tier.
A core block theme
Free, and you lose the hooks and typography control.
Astra
More templates, more weight when configured.

My verdict

GeneratePress is the theme I would choose for any site whose job is content. It is fast because it does not ship things you have not asked for, and the modular premium features mean the weight scales with your actual use rather than with the developer's ambition.

The trade is that it gives you no design. If you cannot make typographic and layout decisions, or pay somebody who can, it will look plain forever, and Kadence will serve you better.

One licence, unlimited sites, lifetime option. For anyone building more than one WordPress site, the maths is not close.
