What it is

Kadence is a fast, block-friendly WordPress theme with a header and footer builder, strong global style controls, and a genuinely usable free version.

It sits between GeneratePress's minimalism and Astra's template library: light enough to be quick, visual enough that a non-technical owner can maintain it.

It is what I put on most client sites, because the client can change the header without calling me.

What it does

The header and footer builders are the standout feature, and they are in the free version. Drag elements into rows, set them differently on mobile, done, without a page builder.

Global typography, colour and spacing controls mean you set the design once and every page inherits it, which is what keeps a site consistent after handover.

Kadence Blocks adds a set of layout blocks to the core editor, covering the gaps that make people install a page builder.

The trade-off is that Kadence Blocks is another dependency, and if you use it heavily your content becomes partly tied to it, though far less severely than with Elementor or Divi.

MY RECOMMENDED PLAN

Free version for most sites, upgrading to the Essential bundle only when you genuinely need the extra blocks. If you build several sites a year, the bundle pays back quickly.

My verdict

Kadence is the best balance in this category for client work. It is fast, the free version does the things people normally pay for, and crucially a non-technical owner can change the header, the colours and the footer without breaking anything or ringing me.

GeneratePress is lighter and I still prefer it for content-heavy sites I maintain myself. For a site I am handing over, Kadence wins on the strength of its visual controls.
