MonsterInsights

★★★

Convenient, and it adds weight to show you a worse version of a report that already exists for free in Google.

BEST FOR
Seeing analytics inside the WordPress dashboard

What it is

MonsterInsights connects Google Analytics to WordPress and displays reports inside the dashboard, so you do not have to open Google Analytics to see basic numbers.

Its genuine value is the connection itself: setting up GA4 tracking, event tracking and enhanced measurement without touching code.

Its questionable value is the dashboard reports, which are a simplified version of data you can already see for free.

What it does

Connects GA4 to WordPress in a guided setup, handling the tracking code and basic event configuration correctly, which is where non-technical owners usually go wrong.

Displays overview reports in the dashboard: sessions, top pages, referrers, devices.

Paid tiers add e-commerce tracking, form conversion tracking, link and download click tracking, and author or category reports.

The cost is page weight and admin load for a convenience. Everything it shows is available in Google Analytics, and the reports it shows are less flexible.

Who it's for

01Non-technical owners who need GA4 connected correctly.
02Businesses where somebody will look at dashboard numbers but never open Google Analytics.
03WooCommerce stores wanting purchase tracking set up without code.
04Sites needing form and download click tracking quickly.
05Agencies wanting clients to see numbers without training.

Good for clients who will not open Google Analytics.
Free version handles basic tracking.
CONS
Adds page weight and admin load for convenience.
Reports are a simplified subset of what GA4 already shows.
Best tracking features are paid.

Pricing

PLAN WHAT YOU GET WORTH IT FOR
Free Basic GA4 connection and overview reports. Getting tracking connected correctly.
Plus Author and category tracking, more reports. Content sites.
Pro E-commerce, forms, custom dimensions. Stores and lead generation sites.
Agency Multiple sites. Agencies.

The free version covers the important part, which is correct tracking. Paid tiers buy event tracking you can also configure manually in GA4.

MY RECOMMENDED PLAN

The free version to get GA4 connected properly, then read your data in Google Analytics. Buy Pro only if nobody in the business will ever open GA4.

Alternatives

Manual GA4 setup
Free, no plugin weight, and you read data in Google. My preference.
Site Kit by Google
Free, official, brings Search Console and Analytics into WordPress.
Independent Analytics
Lighter WordPress-native analytics without Google.
Microsoft Clarity
Free session recordings, which tell you more than any dashboard.

My verdict

MonsterInsights solves a real problem for non-technical owners: getting GA4 tracking installed correctly and seeing numbers without learning Google's interface. That is worth something, and the free version delivers it.

For anybody comfortable adding a tracking snippet, this is weight on every page load to duplicate a free report. I connect GA4 manually and read the data in Google.

If you want in-dashboard numbers, Site Kit by Google is free, official and brings Search Console data too. Try that before paying for this.

02Clients who will not open Google Analytics.
