WORDPRESS THEMES · TOOL REVIEW

Neve

★★★

A reasonable free choice few people would regret and few would fight for. Fast, plain, unremarkable in a good way.

BEST FOR
A light free theme with sensible defaults and quick setup

What it is

Neve is a light multipurpose WordPress theme from ThemeIsle, built to work with the block editor and the major page builders.

Its pitch is speed and simplicity: a small front-end footprint, sensible defaults, and starter sites that get you to something presentable quickly.

It is a competent theme in a category with several better options, and its free version is genuinely usable.

What it does

The base theme is light and quick to configure. Header and footer options, typography and colours are set in the customiser without much hunting.

Starter sites import designed layouts, with the usual caveat about page builder dependencies.

WooCommerce support covers the basics adequately for a small shop.

Its limitation is depth. Header layout control, more block features and advanced options sit behind Neve Pro, and at that price Kadence gives you more for nothing.

Who it's for

01People wanting a light free theme with minimal setup.
02Simple business and portfolio sites.
03Anyone who finds larger themes' settings overwhelming.
04Sites that will use a page builder anyway.
05Users already inside the ThemeIsle plugin ecosystem.

Pros and cons

PROS
Light and fast in base form.
Quick and simple to configure.
Genuinely usable free version.
Good starter sites for simple projects.
Clean, unopinionated design.
CONS
Less free control than Kadence or Blocksy.
Header layout options limited without Pro.
Upsell prompts in the dashboard.
Pro adds little most small sites need.
Smaller community than the leading themes.

Pricing

PLAN WHAT YOU GET WORTH IT FOR
Free Base theme with customiser options and starter sites. Simple sites.
Neve Pro Header booster, custom layouts, extra modules. Sites needing more control.
Agency tiers Multiple sites and white labelling. Agencies.
Bundles Theme plus their plugins. Existing ThemeIsle users.

Neve Pro's key features are free in Kadence and Blocksy. Compare before paying.

MY RECOMMENDED PLAN

The free version. If you find yourself wanting Pro, install Kadence instead and get those features for nothing.

Alternatives

Kadence
Free header and footer builders, better free tier overall. My preference.
Blocksy
Better typography controls, also free.
GeneratePress
Lighter and better for content sites.
Astra
Larger template library at similar weight.

My verdict

Neve is a perfectly good free theme that is hard to recommend over its competitors. It is light, it configures quickly, and everything it charges for in Pro is included free by Kadence or Blocksy.

For a very simple site where you will set colours and fonts and never touch it again, it does the job with no complaints. That is a real use case and it describes a lot of sites.

If you expect to want header control or layout flexibility later, start on Kadence and save yourself the migration.
