What it is

Rank Math is a WordPress SEO plugin covering titles, meta descriptions, sitemaps, canonicals, structured data, redirects and 404 monitoring.

Its distinguishing feature is how much is in the free version: redirects and multiple keyword tracking, which competitors charge for.

It is what I install on new builds, and any of the three major SEO plugins does the core job competently.

What it does

Title and description templates by post type mean you set the pattern once rather than writing them individually for every page, which is the difference between an hour and a week on a large site.

The structured data interface is the best of the three: schema templates per post type and custom schema without hand-writing JSON-LD.

A redirect manager and 404 monitor are included free, and those are the features people usually discover they need six months in.

Its risk is the settings volume. There are a great many toggles, several of which people enable without knowing what they do, and the content analysis score encourages keyword counting.

Who it's for

01New WordPress sites needing the SEO basics handled.
02Site owners who want redirects without paying.
03Anyone working with structured data seriously.
04Local businesses needing LocalBusiness schema.
05People switching from a limited free plugin tier.

Features

Title and meta templates
Set patterns by post type instead of writing each page.
Structured data controls
Schema templates and custom schema without code.
Redirect manager
Included free, with 404 monitoring.
XML sitemaps
Automatic and configurable.
Search Console integration
Query data inside WordPress.
Local and WooCommerce SEO
Included in the free tier.

Pros and cons

PROS
Redirects and 404 monitor free.
Best structured data handling of the three majors.
Title and description templates save real time.
Lighter admin footprint than Yoast in practice.
Setup wizard gets the basics right quickly.
CONS
Many settings people enable without understanding.
Content score encourages keyword counting.
Documentation thinner than Yoast's for unusual problems.
Occasional upgrade prompts in the interface.
Switching from another SEO plugin needs a proper import.

Pricing

PLAN WHAT YOU GET WORTH IT FOR
Free Everything most sites need, including redirects and schema. Almost everybody.
Pro More keyword tracking, analytics, multiple sites. Agencies and multi-site owners.
Business and Agency Client management and higher limits. Agencies at volume.
Lifetime deals Occasionally offered. Worth taking if you are certain.

The free version genuinely covers what most sites need. Pro is about scale and tracking rather than core functionality.

MY RECOMMENDED PLAN

The free version. Pro only if you manage several sites or need its rank tracking, and configure six settings then leave the rest alone.

Alternatives

Yoast SEO
The most conservative and best documented. Redirects are premium only.
The SEO Framework
Lightest of the group, minimal interface, no upsells.
All in One SEO
Good multi-site licensing and local features.
Your theme's built-in SEO
Almost always insufficient. You need a real plugin.

My verdict

Rank Math is what I install on new WordPress sites. The free version includes the redirect manager and schema controls that competitors charge for, and the title templates save hours on any site with more than twenty pages.

Two warnings. First, do not enable settings you cannot explain: the panel offers plenty of rope. Second, turn off the content analysis score on client sites, because it teaches people to count keywords rather than answer questions.

Any of the three majors will do. This one gives you the most for nothing, which is why it wins.

Some links on this page are affiliate links. If you buy through one, I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you, and it never changes the price you pay. It also does not decide what appears on this page: I recommend tools with no affiliate programme just as readily, and leave off tools with generous ones when they do not deserve the space.
