What it is
WP Engine is managed WordPress hosting aimed squarely at businesses and agencies. Server management, caching, security and backups are handled, and the tooling around multi-site management is the best I have used.
It is one of the two names that come up whenever managed WordPress hosting is discussed, alongside Kinsta, and the choice between them is mostly about tooling preference rather than quality.
I have used it on agency work where managing ten client sites from one dashboard mattered more than saving twenty pounds a month.
What it does
Staging, development and production environments come as standard on every site, with one-click copying between them. For anybody making changes to live client sites, that workflow is the product.
Their caching and CDN are handled at platform level, so you remove caching plugins entirely and the site is faster than plugin caching achieves.
Automated daily backups with one-click restore, plus a checkpoint before every update you make through their interface.
The notable constraint is the disallowed plugin list. Certain caching, backup and security plugins are blocked because the platform does that job, which occasionally breaks an inherited site's setup.

My verdict
WP Engine is excellent managed hosting whose real advantage is the tooling around managing many sites. If you look after client websites, the three-environment workflow and multi-site dashboard save hours a month and reduce the chance of breaking something live.
For a single business site I would choose Kinsta for the interface or Cloudways for the price. The premium here is for the agency features, so if you are not using them you are paying for somebody else's workflow.
Check the disallowed plugin list before migrating an existing site. It catches people out at exactly the wrong moment.
