WP Rocket

★★★★★

The one paid plugin I recommend almost universally. Its defaults are better than most people's careful configuration.

BEST FOR
Fixing WordPress speed without configuring anything

What it is

WP Rocket is a premium caching and performance plugin for WordPress. It handles page caching, browser caching, file optimisation, lazy loading and database cleanup from one panel.

Its defining quality is that it works properly the moment you activate it. Most performance plugins require you to understand what minification and render-blocking mean; this one applies sensible defaults immediately.

It is the only paid plugin I recommend to almost every WordPress site owner who is not on a host that caches at server level.

What it does

Page caching is the main event and worth a second or more on most sites straight away.

File optimisation handles CSS and JavaScript minification, combination and deferral, including removing unused CSS, which is normally the fiddliest part of a performance audit.

Lazy loading for images and iframes, with the option to exclude your hero image, which is the mistake most people make when configuring this manually.

Database cleanup, preloading and a CDN integration round it out. There is no free version, which is the only real objection to it.

Who it's for

01Any WordPress site not on a host with server-level caching.
02Owners who want speed without learning performance engineering.
03Agencies standardising performance across client sites.
04Sites failing Core Web Vitals on the basics.
05Anyone who has configured a free caching plugin badly and broken something.

Features

Page caching
Works correctly on activation with no configuration.
File optimisation
Minify, combine, defer and remove unused CSS.
Lazy loading
Images and iframes, with sensible exclusions.
Preloading
Warms the cache and preloads fonts and links.
Database cleanup
Revisions, transients and orphaned data.
CDN integration
Works with most CDN providers, including their own add-on.

Pros and cons

PROS
Correct behaviour immediately after activation.
Covers caching, files, images and database in one plugin.
Removes the need for three or four separate plugins.
Excellent documentation and support.
Unused CSS removal is genuinely difficult to do manually.
CONS
No free version.
Redundant if your host caches at server level.
Annual renewal per site count.
Aggressive file optimisation can break a badly built theme.
Not a substitute for fixing oversized images.

Pricing

PLAN WHAT YOU GET WORTH IT FOR
Single One site, one year of updates and support. Most site owners.
Plus Three sites. Freelancers with a few sites.
Infinite Unlimited sites. Agencies. The tier that pays back fastest.
Renewal Discounted, and the plugin keeps working without it. Budget annually anyway for updates.

Priced annually per site count. The plugin continues to work if you lapse, though you lose updates and support, which matters after WordPress core releases.

MY RECOMMENDED PLAN

A single-site licence if you have one site, Infinite if you manage more than three. Skip it entirely if your host already caches at server level.

Alternatives

LiteSpeed Cache
Free and better, if your host runs LiteSpeed. Check before buying anything.
Server-level caching
Kinsta, WP Engine and Cloudways all cache better than any plugin. Use theirs.
W3 Total Cache
Free and capable, and very easy to misconfigure.
FlyingPress
A newer paid competitor with comparable results.

My verdict

WP Rocket is the rare paid plugin whose value is obvious within ten minutes. Activate it, clear the cache, retest, and most unoptimised WordPress sites are a second or more faster with no decisions made.

The two situations where I would not buy it: your host caches at server level, in which case theirs is faster, or your host runs LiteSpeed, in which case LiteSpeed Cache is free and equally good.

Everywhere else, this is the first thing I install on a slow WordPress site, and it is usually the last thing needed after fixing the images.

Who should avoid it

01Anyone on Kinsta, WP Engine or Cloudways, where server caching is better.

04Anyone unwilling to test after enabling file optimisation.
