Zoho CRM

★★★★

Remarkable value and less polished than its rivals. If you can live with the interface, the price is unbeatable.

BEST FOR
Businesses wanting a full suite at a low price

What it is

Zoho CRM is the sales and contact management part of Zoho's very large business suite, which also covers email, accounting, projects, help desk and around forty other applications.

Its proposition is price. You get capability comparable to considerably more expensive CRMs, and an interface that feels a generation behind.

For a business willing to standardise on Zoho, the suite pricing is genuinely difficult to argue with.

What it does

Contact, lead and deal management with pipelines, custom fields and workflow automation at every paid tier.

Workflow rules, assignment rules and approval processes handle the operational side properly, which cheaper CRMs usually do not.

Integration across Zoho's other applications means accounting, email and support all reference the same records, without connectors.

Reporting and forecasting are capable, and the analytics are better than the price suggests.

Who it's for

01Businesses prioritising cost over interface quality.
02Companies willing to adopt several Zoho applications.
03Teams needing workflow automation cheaply.
04Organisations outside the US wanting local data options.
05Businesses that found HubSpot's paid pricing prohibitive.

Capable analytics for the price.

Pros and cons

PROS
Extraordinary value for the capability.
Workflow automation on affordable tiers.
Integrates with a very broad suite.
Free tier for up to three users.
Deep customisation available.
CONS
Interface feels dated and cluttered.
Setup takes longer than rivals.
Support quality varies.
Suite breadth encourages over-adoption.
Salespeople resist it more than they resist Pipedrive.

Pricing

PLAN WHAT YOU GET WORTH IT FOR
Free Up to three users, core CRM. Very small teams.
Standard Workflows, custom fields, reports. Small businesses.
Professional Blueprints, inventory, validation rules. Growing teams. The usual tier.
Enterprise and Ultimate Advanced customisation and analytics. Larger organisations.

Substantially cheaper than HubSpot or Salesforce at every tier, with annual billing reducing it further. Zoho One bundles the whole suite per employee.

MY RECOMMENDED PLAN

The Standard or Professional tier, depending on whether you need approval workflows. Consider Zoho One if you would use four or more of their applications.

Alternatives

Pipedrive
Better interface and adoption, more expensive, sales-focused.
HubSpot CRM free
Free and more polished, with expensive paid upgrades.
Capsule CRM
Simpler and cheaper for small service businesses.
Salesforce
Enterprise-grade at many times the price.

My verdict

Zoho CRM is the value choice in this category and the interface is the price you pay. Feature for feature it beats tools costing three times as much, and it looks and feels like software from an earlier era.

That matters more than it should, because a CRM only works if the people using it update it. I have seen Zoho implementations abandoned for exactly that reason and Pipedrive implementations survive on worse features.

If cost is the deciding factor, or you would genuinely use several Zoho applications, this is the right answer. If adoption is your risk, pay more for Pipedrive.
