What Is AI Personalisation? Relevance Without Creepiness
DICTIONARY · AI

What Is AI Personalisation?

AI personalisation is adapting content, recommendations or offers to an individual based on their behaviour and characteristics.

In plain English

Done well it is invisible: better recommendations, a more relevant first screen, an email that arrives about something you were actually looking at.

Done badly it is unsettling. The line is whether the personalisation uses information the person knowingly gave you, and whether it feels like service or surveillance.

What to know

Behavioural input
What someone viewed, bought or engaged with.
Recommendation
The most reliable application, and the least intrusive.
Dynamic content
Different copy, offers or layouts by segment.
Consent and transparency
What data, why, and how to opt out.

Why it matters

Recommendation and sensible sequencing produce real returns and rarely trouble anyone. Aggressive individual targeting produces marginal gains and real reputational risk, which is a poor trade.

Common mistakes

×Personalising with data the customer did not knowingly provide.
×Referencing browsing behaviour explicitly, which reads as surveillance.
×Segmenting so finely that no segment has enough data to be reliable.
×No measurement, so nobody knows whether it helped.

FAQs

Where does personalisation work best?

Recommendations and product discovery, followed by email timing and sequencing.

What is the main risk?

Feeling intrusive. If a customer would be uncomfortable knowing how it works, reconsider it.
