What Is a Block? The Unit of the Modern Editor
DICTIONARY · WORDPRESS

What Is a Block in WordPress?

A block is a modular content element used in the WordPress block editor.

In plain English

A paragraph is a block, so is an image, a heading, a button, a gallery and a query loop. Pages are assembled from them rather than written as one field of markup.

The advantage is structure: content becomes composed of identifiable parts rather than a wall of HTML. The adjustment is that editing feels different from the classic editor.

What to know

Modular
Each element is a discrete block.
Structured content
Identifiable parts, not raw markup.
Patterns and reusable blocks
Saved arrangements for reuse.
Theme-aware
Block themes style them consistently.

Why it matters

Block-based content is more portable than page-builder content, because it is stored in WordPress rather than inside a plugin's own format. That matters when the site is rebuilt later.

Common mistakes

×Blocks from plugins that break when the plugin is removed.
×Rebuilding the same layout instead of saving a pattern.
×Fighting the editor rather than learning it.
×Custom HTML blocks used where a native block exists.

FAQs

Are blocks better than a page builder?

More portable, and less visually flexible. For most content sites that is the right trade.

What are patterns?

Saved block arrangements you can insert repeatedly.
