What Is a Conversion Funnel? Where People Drop Out
DICTIONARY · DIGITAL MARKETING

What Is a Conversion Funnel?

A conversion funnel is the sequence of steps between first interaction and the action you wanted, with fewer people at each stage.

In plain English

The value of the model is not the shape. It is that it forces you to measure each step separately, which reveals where people are actually leaving.

Almost always one step is dramatically worse than the others. Fixing that step is worth more than improving all the rest, and most optimisation effort goes somewhere else.

What to know

Defined steps
Each stage measured separately, not just the final rate.
Find the worst
The largest drop-off is where the return is.
Fix, then re-measure
The bottleneck moves once you fix one.
Not linear in reality
The funnel is a measurement device, not a description of behaviour.

Why it matters

Overall conversion rate tells you there is a problem. A funnel tells you where. That difference is what separates optimisation from redesigning things that were already working.

Common mistakes

×Optimising the top of the funnel when the checkout is broken.
×Measuring only the final conversion rate.
×Redesigning the whole page instead of the failing step.
×Changing several things at once, so nothing is learnable.

FAQs

Where do most funnels leak?

The form or checkout, and the step where price first appears.

How do I find the worst step?

Measure each transition separately. The percentage drop names it immediately.
