What Is the Meta Pixel?

The Meta Pixel is a piece of code used to measure website activity and advertising results.

In plain English

Installed on the site, it records events such as page views, add-to-cart and purchases, and reports them back so campaigns can be optimised and audiences built.

Browser-based tracking has degraded substantially through privacy features and blockers. The pixel alone now sees materially less than it once did, which is why server-side sending exists.

What to know

Browser-side
Fires from the visitor's browser.
Records events
Standard and custom.
Builds audiences
Website custom audiences depend on it.
Degraded coverage
Blockers and privacy features reduce what it sees.

Why it matters

Pixel history cannot be recreated, which is why it should live in a portfolio the business owns. Installing it before you advertise is worth doing for that reason alone.

Common mistakes

×Pixel installed in an agency-owned portfolio.
×No verification that events fire correctly.
×Duplicate pixels double-counting conversions.
×Relying on the pixel alone with no server-side sending.

FAQs

Should I install the pixel before advertising?

Yes. It starts accumulating audience data immediately.

Is the pixel still enough?

Not on its own. Pair it with the Conversions API.
