What Is MCP? A Standard for Connecting AI to Tools
DICTIONARY · AI

What Is the Model Context Protocol?

The Model Context Protocol, MCP, is an open standard for connecting AI assistants to external tools and data sources.

In plain English

Before a standard, every assistant needed a bespoke integration for every tool. That is the same integration problem that has appeared in every wave of software, solved the same way: agree a common interface.

With MCP a tool implements the protocol once and any compliant assistant can use it, which changes the economics of building integrations.

What to know

An open standard
A defined interface between assistants and external capabilities.
Solves fan-out
One implementation rather than one per assistant.
Servers expose capability
A tool or data source publishes what it can do.
Permissions still apply
Standardised access is not unrestricted access.

Why it matters

Standards decide which ecosystems become useful. For a business the practical consequence is that connecting an assistant to your own systems is becoming a configuration task rather than a development project.

Common mistakes

×Building bespoke integrations where a standard connector exists.
×Granting broad permissions because the connection was easy to make.
×Assuming a standard implies security review.
×Connecting production systems without an audit log.

FAQs

Do I need to know about MCP?

If you are connecting AI to your own systems, yes. Otherwise it is background.

Is it secure by default?

The protocol standardises access. Permissions and review remain your responsibility.
