What is responsive design?

Designing websites that adapt to different screen sizes.

In plain English

Responsive design means one site that reflows to fit whatever screen it lands on. Columns stack, type resizes, navigation collapses, images scale. Same content and same address, different arrangement.

It replaced the old approach of maintaining a separate mobile site. One set of pages is easier to maintain, easier to link to, and easier for search engines to understand.

What to know

Layout adapts at breakpoints
The design shifts arrangement at set widths. Three columns become one, a horizontal menu becomes a button, generous margins tighten up.
Fluid, not fixed
Widths in percentages and flexible units rather than fixed pixel columns, so the layout works between breakpoints too.
Responsive is not the same as usable
A page can technically fit a phone and still be miserable to use. Check tap targets, form fields and reading length, not just that nothing overflows.
Test on real devices
Browser resizing catches layout issues. Real phones catch the rest, including performance on a mediocre connection.

Why it matters

Most traffic to most business sites is now mobile, and Google evaluates the mobile version of your pages. A site that only works properly on desktop is a site that fails for the majority of visitors and gets judged on the version they see.

Common mistakes

×Checking that the layout fits on mobile but never actually using it on a phone.
×Hiding important content on small screens instead of reordering it.
×Leaving tap targets and form fields too small to use comfortably.
×Serving desktop-sized images to phones, so the page is responsive but slow.

FAQs

Is responsive design the same as mobile-first design?

No. Responsive is the outcome, one site that adapts. Mobile-first is an approach, designing the small screen first and enhancing upwards. Most mobile-first sites are responsive.

Do I need a separate mobile site?

No. A responsive site is simpler to maintain and avoids splitting your content across two addresses.
