What is web development?

The technical process of building and maintaining websites and web applications.

Web development is the building. Turning a design into working pages, connecting forms, wiring up a content management system, making the thing fast and secure, and keeping it running afterwards.

It splits roughly into front end, which is what the visitor sees and interacts with, and back end, which is the server, database and logic behind it. Most small business sites need modest amounts of both.
