What Is a Wordmark?

A wordmark is a logo consisting primarily of the brand name set in distinctive typography.

In plain English

No symbol, just the name treated well. It is the most practical choice for most small businesses, because it builds name recognition and mark recognition at the same time.

A symbol has to be taught. Nobody knows what an abstract shape means until they have seen it beside the name enough times, which takes a budget most businesses do not have.

What to know

Name as mark
Typography does the identifying.
Teaches the name
Recognition and naming build together.
Practical
Legible, scalable, easy to apply.
Needs a distinctive setting
Customised lettering, not a default font.

Why it matters

For any business that is not yet known, a wordmark is usually the correct choice. Symbols become valuable once the name is already established, and not before.

Common mistakes

×Setting the name in an unmodified default typeface.
×A wordmark too long to work at small sizes.
×Adding a symbol nobody will learn.
×Choosing a script that fails in mono or at small scale.

FAQs

Wordmark or symbol?

Wordmark, until people already know your name.

Does it need custom lettering?

Some adjustment, at minimum. An untouched font is not distinctive.
