AI Website Builders in 2026: Are They Good Enough to Replace Developers?

They now produce a site that looks finished in four minutes. Whether that site earns you anything is a different question, and the answer depends on what you were paying a developer for.

By Tariq Sallam·September 2026

I have built the same five-page business site three times this year: once by hand, once with an AI builder, once with an AI builder plus a day of my own editing. The AI-only version looked the best in the first ten seconds and performed the worst on every measure I care about.

That is roughly the state of the technology. Presentation is solved. Judgement is not. What follows is what they genuinely do well, where they fail, and how to decide.

Quick Info

What they replace
Template selection, layout, first-draft structure
What they do not replace
Strategy, copy, conversion design, integrations, migrations
Best use
A working first draft you then edit properly
Worst use
Publishing the output unedited
Time saved on a small site
One to two days
Where they cost you money
Generic copy, and rebuilding when you outgrow the output

What they are genuinely good at now

Producing a coherent layout in minutes, with sensible spacing, type hierarchy and a consistent visual system.
Generating the page structure a business site needs, so nothing obvious is missing.
Turning a description into a working draft you can react to, which is faster than starting from a blank canvas.
Basic technical hygiene. The output is usually responsive, reasonably fast and validly marked up.
Making decisions for people who freeze at template selection, which is a real and common blocker.

Reacting to a bad draft is much easier than producing a good one from nothing. That is the honest value here and it is not small.

Where they consistently fail

The copy

Generated website copy is the most recognisable output of this technology. It is fluent, structurally correct, and says nothing a competitor could not also say. "We deliver innovative solutions tailored to your needs" appears on the first draft of almost every site I have generated, in various costumes.

Conversion decisions

The builders produce attractive pages, not persuasive ones. What goes above the fold, which objection to answer first, how many fields the form should have, what the button says: these are judgement calls informed by knowing the customer, and the generator does not know your customer.

Anything unusual

Bookings against real availability, a members area, a product feed, an integration with the system you already use. This is where the four-minute build becomes a three-week project, and where a developer stops being optional.

Migrations

No AI builder will map your 180 existing URLs to their new equivalents. If you have a site with rankings, this alone justifies hiring somebody.

The builder gives you a site. What it cannot give you is a reason for anybody to choose you.

The honest comparison

Against the three realistic alternatives for a small business site.

Against a template you choose yourself: the AI builder is faster and produces a more coherent result. Genuine win.
Against a competent freelancer at £2,000: the builder saves the money and loses the strategy, the copy and the conversion thinking. Whether that is a saving depends on whether the site needs to compete.
Against an agency build: not a comparison. Different problems.
Against no website: obviously better, and this is the case where I recommend them without reservation.

How to use one properly

01Generate the draft, then treat it as a wireframe rather than a website.
02Rewrite every word of the copy. This is the step that decides whether the site works and the step everybody skips.
03Replace every generated or stock image with a real photograph of the real thing.
04Fix the conversion path: one clear action per page, a short form, contact details visible.
05Check speed and mobile properly. The output is usually decent and occasionally carries a heavy hero video.
06Set up analytics, Search Console and the technical basics, which the builder will not do for you.

That is a day of work on top of a four-minute build, and it is the difference between a template and a website.

When to hire a developer anyway

You have an existing site with search rankings to protect.
You need integrations with anything: a booking system, a CRM, stock, payments beyond a simple checkout.
The site is a primary revenue channel and a percentage of conversion is worth real money.
You have accessibility obligations, which need testing rather than assuming.
Nobody in the business will maintain it, and you want somebody accountable when it breaks.

In each case the developer is not competing with the builder on producing pages. They are being paid for the decisions and the accountability, which is what you were actually buying all along.

What I would do in three situations

Brand new business, no budget

Use an AI builder, spend the saved money on photography, and rewrite the copy yourself. You will have a better site than most of your competitors had in their first year.

Established business, tired website, no rankings to lose

Generate a draft to settle the structure, then pay a freelancer to take it seriously. You will get a better result for less than a full custom build because the structural argument is already resolved.

Established business with organic traffic

Hire somebody. The redirect map alone is worth more than the whole build cost, and the redesign checklist explains why.

Where this is heading

The trajectory is clear enough: within a few years the builders will handle integrations and produce competent conversion structures, because those are patterns and patterns are what these systems learn.

What they will still not have is knowledge of your customers, your pricing, your objections and what makes you different. That has always been the valuable part of the work, and it was never the part the software was doing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an AI builder replace a web developer?

For a simple brochure site with no integrations and no existing rankings, largely yes. For anything with functionality, a migration or a real conversion target, no.

Is AI-generated website copy bad for SEO?

It is not penalised for being generated. It performs badly because it is generic, and generic copy neither ranks nor converts.

Are AI-built sites fast?

Usually reasonably fast, which is more than can be said for many hand-built page-builder sites. Check the hero media, which is where the weight tends to be.

Will an AI builder handle my redirects if I rebuild?

No. This is the main reason not to use one on a site that already has search traffic.

Which builder is best?

They converge quickly and the differences are mostly in the editor. Choose based on how comfortable the editing experience is, because you will spend your time there, not in the generation step.

Should I disclose that my site was built with AI?

No need. Nobody asks how a site was built. They ask whether it answers their question.

Before You Go

AI website builders are a real productivity gain and a poor substitute for judgement. They have replaced the part of web design that was template selection, which was never the expensive part.

Use one to get to a draft in an afternoon, then spend the saved time on the copy and the photographs. That combination beats both the unedited output and most cheap custom builds.

Generate the draft. Then do the actual work.
