Voice search was oversold for about five years and then quietly became normal, which is the usual pattern.
It never replaced typing. What it did was change the shape of a portion of local queries, and then AI assistants took that shape and made it the default for typed queries too.
The consequential part is not the voice. It is the number of results. A spoken answer gives you one business, occasionally three. There is no page two, no scrolling, no comparison.
That changes the value of being first from significant to almost total, in the slice of searches that work this way.
Here is what to do about it.
Quick Info
How Spoken Queries Differ
Three consistent differences from typed queries.
And the answer comes back as a single recommendation with a call button, which is a fundamentally different competitive situation from a page of ten links.
Ten results is a market. One result is a winner-takes-all.
What the Single Answer Is Assembled From
From testing across client sectors, the same four inputs come up repeatedly, and none of them are exotic.
Which means the work is largely the same work as ordinary local SEO, with a much higher premium on accuracy of the operational details.
The Operational Fixes
These are boring and they decide the outcome.
I have watched a business lose a fortnight of urgent enquiries because it forgot to set holiday hours and appeared closed. There is no content strategy that recovers that.
Writing for Spoken Questions
The content principle is the same one that runs through all of AI search, which is convenient.
Take the questions people ask out loud, make each one a heading, and answer it directly underneath in a way that stands alone. Roughly a hundred and fifty words, plainly worded, no preamble.
For a local business, that list of questions is short and knowable. How much does it cost, how quickly can you come, do you cover my area, are you certified, what happens if it turns out to be something worse, do you work weekends.
Write those, on the site and in the profile's questions section. That is the whole content requirement, and it doubles as the FAQ your enquiry calls need anyway.
Reviews Again
Since rating and volume act as the tie-break between comparable options, and since review text answers conditions, this is where a comparable business beats you or you beat them.
Nothing new to add beyond my reviews strategy article, except this. For urgent services, recency matters disproportionately. A five-star average from three years ago reads as historical rather than current.
A steady two a month keeps you looking active. It is a small operational habit with outsized effect here.
What Not to Bother With
A few things were sold as voice search optimisation and were never worth the time.
Speakable schema had a narrow application and has not become the mechanism people hoped. Not harmful, rarely useful.
Writing content in a deliberately conversational voice for the sake of matching spoken phrasing. Answer clearly and the phrasing takes care of itself. Writing as though you are chatting produces worse content for readers and no benefit.
Chasing voice-specific keyword lists. The useful list is the questions your customers ask on the phone, which you already have access to for free.
And do not build a separate voice strategy. It is the same profile, the same reviews, the same clear answers, held to a higher standard of operational accuracy.
Frequently Asked Questions
It is normal rather than novel, and its query patterns have spread into typed search through AI assistants. The longer, more conditional phrasing is now the pattern regardless of input method.
Being open right now, followed by proximity, then reviews, then plainly stating that you do the specific thing asked for.
Almost certainly not. It has never become the mechanism it was promoted as. Spend the time on hours, services and reviews.
Take the questions customers ask on the phone, make each a heading, and answer it in about a hundred and fifty plainly worded words that stand alone.
Because urgent spoken queries filter on availability first. Incorrect or missing holiday hours remove you from consideration entirely.
No. Write clearly. Clarity handles spoken phrasing without making the content worse for readers.
Before You Go
The whole of voice and assistant optimisation for a local business comes down to being accurately described, currently reviewed, genuinely open and easy to call.
Set your holiday hours for the year this afternoon. It is fifteen minutes and it is the highest-return item in this article.
