What Is Analytics? Collecting Data and Deciding Something With It
DICTIONARY · ANALYTICS

What Is Analytics?

Analytics is the process of collecting and interpreting data to understand performance.

In plain English

Two halves: gathering the data, and working out what it means. Almost every business does the first and comparatively few do the second.

The test of an analytics setup is whether any decision has changed because of it. A dashboard nobody acts on is a cost rather than a capability.

What to know

Collection
Recording what happened, accurately.
Interpretation
Working out what it means.
Decision
The point of the exercise.
Fewer numbers
Tracked well beats many tracked badly.

Why it matters

Analytics earns its keep when it settles a specific question. Set up to record everything with no question in mind, it produces reports that get opened once.

Common mistakes

×Tracking everything and deciding nothing.
×Dashboards nobody reads.
×Trusting data that was never verified.
×Measuring what is easy rather than what matters.

FAQs

Where should I start?

With a question you actually need answered, then measure what answers it.

How much should I track?
