What Is a Brand Mission?

A brand mission is what a brand does and who it exists to serve.

In plain English

A good mission is dull in the best way: it says plainly what the business does, for whom, and to what end. Anyone reading it should understand the business.

Most mission statements fail this test. They are written to sound impressive and end up describing nothing recognisable, which is why nobody in the company can quote them.

What to know

States the work
What the business actually does.
Names the beneficiary
Who it is for.
Plain language
No abstractions that could mean anything.
Recallable
If staff cannot quote it, it is not working.

Why it matters

A clear mission is a decision-making shortcut. It settles whether a new opportunity is yours to pursue, which is most of what strategy does in practice.

Common mistakes

×Aspirational language that describes no actual activity.
×A mission nobody in the business can recall.
×Writing it for investors rather than for decisions.
×Conflating mission, vision and values into one paragraph.

FAQs

How long should a mission statement be?

One sentence. If it needs two, it is doing more than one job.

Should it be public?

It can be. Its main value is internal clarity.
