What Is a Value Proposition? Why Anyone Should Choose You
DICTIONARY · FUNDAMENTALS

What Is a Value Proposition?

A value proposition is a clear statement of the benefit you offer, who it is for, and why it is better than the alternatives.

In plain English

It answers one question: why should this person choose you rather than the other option, including the option of doing nothing.

The test is substitution. If a competitor could put their name on your value proposition and it would still read true, it is not a value proposition. It is a category description.

What to know

Names the benefit
The outcome the customer gets, in their words.
Names the customer
Who it is for, specifically.
States the difference
What you do that the alternatives do not.
Survives substitution
Only true when your name is on it.

Why it matters

Everything downstream depends on this: the homepage, the ads, the sales conversation. A vague value proposition produces vague marketing regardless of how well it is executed.

Common mistakes

×Describing features rather than the outcome.
×Claims any competitor could make word for word.
×Written in internal language rather than the customer's.
×Never tested against the option of doing nothing.

FAQs

How long should it be?

One or two sentences. If it needs a paragraph, the thinking is not finished.

How do I test it?

Put a competitor's name on it. If it still reads true, rewrite it.
