What Is a Call to Action? One Clear Next Step
DICTIONARY · COPYWRITING

What Is a Call to Action?

A call to action is a prompt telling someone what action to take next.

In plain English

Its job is removing ambiguity. The reader has decided they are interested; the call to action tells them precisely what happens next and what it involves.

Competing calls to action reduce all of them. A page offering three equally weighted choices produces fewer of each than a page offering one.

What to know

One primary action
Per page, per email, per section.
States the action
Get the guide, not Submit.
Sets expectations
What happens after the click.
Repeated
Once at the decision point, once at the end.

Why it matters

Most pages lose people not to weak argument but to unclear next steps. Naming the action specifically is one of the cheapest conversion improvements available.

Common mistakes

×Generic button text like Submit or Click here.
×Several competing actions with equal weight.
×No indication of what happens next.
×Only one call to action, at the very bottom of a long page.

FAQs

How many calls to action per page?

One primary. Repeating it is fine; competing with it is not.

What wording works?

The action in the reader's words, with the outcome attached.
