In plain English
The distinction from an audience is direction. An audience listens to you; a community talks to each other. That is a different and much more valuable thing, and much harder to create.
It requires sustained moderation and genuine participation. Communities that are set up and then left alone die quietly, and a visibly dead community is worse than none.
What to know
Why it matters
For businesses whose customers benefit from talking to each other, courses, tools, professional services, community produces retention and referral no campaign can match. For transactional businesses it is usually the wrong investment.
Common mistakes
FAQs

Wherever your members already are. Owned platforms give control and cost reach.
