What Is Referral Marketing? Systematising Word of Mouth
DICTIONARY · DIGITAL MARKETING

What Is Referral Marketing?

Referral marketing is deliberately encouraging existing customers and partners to introduce new ones.

In plain English

Most businesses get referrals and almost none ask for them systematically. The difference between passive and deliberate referral is usually a significant amount of revenue.

Referred customers also behave better: they arrive pre-trusted, convert faster and churn less, because someone they know already vouched for you.

What to know

Ask deliberately
At the point of a good outcome, not in a quarterly email.
Make it easy
One link, one sentence they can forward.
Incentivise carefully
Reward both sides, or the referrer looks self-interested.
Track it
Otherwise it stays invisible and unmanaged.

Why it matters

Referral is the cheapest acquisition channel that exists and the one most often left to chance. The main obstacle is not customer willingness; it is that nobody in the business has been made responsible for asking.

Common mistakes

×Never asking, and calling it word of mouth.
×Asking at the wrong moment, before value was delivered.
×Incentives large enough to make the recommendation look purchased.
×No tracking, so referred revenue is never credited.

FAQs

When should I ask?

Immediately after a visible success, while the goodwill is specific.

Should I pay for referrals?

A modest two-sided reward works. Large payments change how the recommendation reads.
