What Is Demand Generation? Creating Interest That Did Not Exist
DICTIONARY · FUNDAMENTALS

What Is Demand Generation?

Demand generation is creating interest in a problem or solution among people who were not looking for it.

In plain English

Demand capture serves people already searching. Demand generation makes people aware they have a problem worth solving, which is a different and harder job.

It is also much harder to measure. The effect shows up later, in other channels, as an increase in searches for your name or your category.

What to know

Creates awareness of the problem
Before anyone is searching for a solution.
Long payback
Effects appear months later, in other channels.
Measured indirectly
Branded search, direct traffic, unprompted enquiries.
Needs capture ready
Generated demand goes to whoever captures it, including competitors.

Why it matters

Businesses in new categories have no choice: nobody is searching for something they do not know exists. Businesses in established categories often skip it and compete entirely on capturing existing demand, which gets more expensive every year.

Common mistakes

×Generating demand with no capture route, so competitors collect it.
×Judging demand generation on last-click attribution.
×Expecting it to convert in the same quarter.
×Doing only capture, then wondering why costs keep rising.

FAQs

Should I do demand generation or capture first?

Capture, if demand exists. Generation is necessary when it does not.

How do I measure it?

Branded search volume and direct traffic over quarters, not weeks.
