What Is Inbound Marketing? Being Found Rather Than Interrupting

What Is Inbound Marketing?

Inbound marketing is attracting potential customers by publishing content and experiences useful enough that they come to you.

In plain English

Instead of interrupting people, you answer the questions they were already asking. Search, content, guides and tools do the work of finding buyers rather than the reverse.

It compounds, which is its main advantage, and it is slow to start, which is its main cost. Both facts need stating before anyone commits to it.

What to know

Attract
Content answering real questions your customers ask before buying.
Convert
A reason to identify themselves: a resource, a tool, a consultation.
Nurture
Email and content that build familiarity until they are ready.
Compound
Pages keep working. The asset grows rather than resetting.

Why it matters

Inbound is the most durable marketing available to a small business, because it produces assets rather than events. It is also the wrong answer when revenue is needed this quarter, and pretending otherwise is how it gets abandoned at month four.

Common mistakes

×Expecting results in the first quarter.
×Publishing content with no commercial page to lead to.
×Gating everything, so nothing gets shared or ranked.
×Abandoning it before the compounding starts.

FAQs

How long before it works?

Six to twelve months for meaningful search traffic on a newer site.

Should I run ads alongside?

Usually yes. Ads produce revenue and data while inbound builds.
