What Is a Digital Presence?

A digital presence is the whole set of online properties through which a business can be discovered: your site, your profiles, your listings and what others say about you.

In plain English

It is larger than your website. Search results for your name, social profiles, directory listings, review sites and press coverage are all part of what someone finds when they check you out.

Most businesses control less of it than they assume, and the parts they do not control are often the parts a buyer reads first.

What to know

Owned
Your website, blog, email list. Fully controlled.
Claimed
Profiles and listings you own but do not host.
Earned
Reviews, mentions, coverage. Influenced, not controlled.
Consistency
The same name, description and details everywhere.

Why it matters

A buyer checking you out sees the whole presence, not just the site. An out-of-date listing or an unanswered review does more damage than a slightly weaker homepage, because it suggests nobody is paying attention.

Common mistakes

×Optimising the website while listings sit out of date.
×Unclaimed profiles someone else can edit.
×Inconsistent details across platforms, which also weakens entity recognition.
×Never searching your own brand name to see what a buyer sees.

FAQs

How do I audit it?

Search your brand name in an incognito window and work through everything on the first two pages.

What matters most?

Accuracy and consistency. Volume of profiles is not the goal.
