In plain English
A heatmap overlays your page with colour showing where visitors clicked, how far they scrolled, or where the cursor lingered. It turns behaviour into something you can see at a glance.
They are best treated as a source of questions rather than answers. A heatmap shows you that people are clicking a non-clickable heading. It does not tell you why, and that is what you need to find out.
What to know
Why it matters
Heatmaps are the cheapest way to see your own site through a stranger eyes. Almost every one I have looked at surfaced at least one thing the team assumed was obvious and was not. That is a good return on a free tool and twenty minutes.
Common mistakes
FAQs
How much traffic do I need for a useful heatmap?
Enough for patterns rather than noise. A few hundred sessions on a page starts to be meaningful.
Are heatmaps a privacy concern?
They collect behavioural data, so disclose them and configure masking of form inputs. Consent rules apply as with other tracking.
