What Is Keyword Difficulty? What the Score Measures and Misses
DICTIONARY · SEO

What Is Keyword Difficulty?

Keyword difficulty is a tool's estimate of how hard it would be to rank for a query, usually expressed as a score out of 100.

In plain English

The score is mostly a function of the links pointing at the pages currently ranking. It is a useful shortcut and a poor substitute for looking at the results yourself.

What it cannot see is whether the ranking pages actually answer the question well, whether the intent is being served, or whether you have expertise none of them have.

What to know

Link-based
Most scores derive from the authority of the pages currently ranking.
Relative, not absolute
A 30 is hard for a new site and trivial for an established one.
Blind to quality
A weak page with strong links inflates the score and is often beatable.
Blind to you
It knows nothing about your credibility in the subject.

Why it matters

Difficulty scores are best used to sort a long list quickly, then discarded. The real judgement is made by opening the results and asking whether you could write something plainly better, which is a question no tool answers.

Common mistakes

×Filtering out everything above an arbitrary score.
×Trusting scores that differ wildly between tools without asking why.
×Ignoring easy queries where the ranking pages are visibly poor.
×Comparing your difficulty threshold to a competitor with ten years of links.

FAQs

Why do tools disagree on difficulty?

Different link indexes and different formulas. Use one tool consistently rather than averaging them.

What is a realistic score for a new site?

Lower than the tool suggests. Judge by looking at whether the ranking pages are genuinely good.
