In plain English
Every other crawl diagnostic is an inference. Logs are the record: this bot requested this URL at this time and got this status code.
That makes it the only way to see crawl waste directly, which URLs are being hammered, which important pages are never visited, and which bots are consuming your capacity.
What to know
Why it matters
On large sites, log analysis finds problems no crawler or Search Console report can: parameters consuming most of the crawl, or a section never visited at all. On small sites it is usually unnecessary.
Common mistakes
FAQs
Do I need log analysis?
Only on large or automatically generated sites, or when crawl behaviour is genuinely unexplained.
How much data do I need?
At least a few weeks, to cover normal crawl cycles.
