What Is an Opt-In? Permission, Specifically Given
DICTIONARY · EMAIL

What Is an Opt-In?

An opt-in is the act of giving permission to receive marketing communications.

In plain English

Valid consent is freely given, specific and informed. The person knew what they were agreeing to, chose it deliberately, and can withdraw it easily.

Bundling consent into a purchase or hiding it in terms is technically common and practically useless. Those addresses do not open anything, and they harm delivery for the ones that would.

What to know

Freely given
Not a condition of something else.
Specific
For a stated type of email.
Informed
They knew what they were agreeing to.
Withdrawable
Unsubscribing must be simple and honoured.

Why it matters

Consent quality shows up directly in open rates and deliverability. A list built from deliberate opt-ins performs several times better than one built from bundled permission.

Common mistakes

×Pre-ticked consent boxes.
×Treating a purchase as marketing consent.
×Vague descriptions of what will be sent.
×Making unsubscribing difficult.

FAQs

Is a purchase an opt-in?

Not for marketing email in most jurisdictions. Ask separately.

Single or double opt-in?

Double for list quality and deliverability; single for volume.
