What Is Reach? The Count of People Exposed
DICTIONARY · SOCIAL

What Is Reach?

Reach is the number of unique users exposed to a piece of content.

In plain English

It is a delivery metric. It confirms that content was distributed to a certain number of people and says nothing about whether any of them registered it.

Platforms define exposure differently, so reach figures are not comparable between them. Within one platform, tracked over time, it is a useful trend.

What to know

Unique users
One person, counted once.
Platform-specific
Definitions vary, so cross-platform comparison misleads.
A denominator
Engagement rate depends on it.
Delivery, not attention
Exposure is not the same as being noticed.

Why it matters

Reach is the number most often quoted to demonstrate success and the one that least demonstrates it. Its legitimate use is as context for the metrics that do indicate effect.

Common mistakes

×Presenting reach as a result.
×Comparing reach between platforms.
×Buying reach on channels that never convert.
×Ignoring frequency, so the same people are reached repeatedly.

FAQs

What is a good reach figure?

There is no benchmark. Judge the trend and what followed from it.

Why do platforms report reach differently?

Each defines an exposure differently. Use one platform's numbers against themselves only.
