What Is Readability? Understood Without Effort
DICTIONARY · COPYWRITING

What Is Readability?

Readability is how easily a piece of writing can be understood.

In plain English

Readability formulas count sentence and word length, which is a rough proxy. They cannot tell whether the sentence made sense, only whether it was long.

The changes that genuinely help are shorter sentences, plain words where a plain word exists, and one idea per paragraph. Jargon removal usually does more than any score improvement.

What to know

Sentence length
The most reliable single factor.
Plain vocabulary
Where an ordinary word will do.
One idea per paragraph
Structure aids comprehension.
Scores are a guide
Not a target to optimise.

Why it matters

Readable writing is not simplified writing. It is the same substance with the obstacles removed, and readers of every level prefer it.

Common mistakes

×Writing to hit a readability score.
×Jargon used to signal expertise.
×Long paragraphs with several ideas.
×Assuming a technical audience prefers dense prose. They do not.

FAQs

What reading level should I aim for?

Whatever your audience reads comfortably. Simpler is rarely a mistake.

Do readability scores matter for SEO?

Not directly. They correlate with content people actually finish.
