In plain English
Revenue is the total money coming in from what you sell, before any costs are taken off. Turnover in British usage. It is the top line, and the number people quote when describing how big a business is.
It is also the number most likely to mislead. Revenue says nothing about whether the business makes money or has any in the bank. Businesses fail at every level of revenue.
What to know
Why it matters
Revenue is the number that gets celebrated and the one that explains least. When you are assessing marketing performance, revenue by channel is only interesting alongside margin and acquisition cost. Otherwise you optimise towards the work you least want.
Common mistakes
FAQs
What is the difference between revenue and turnover?
They mean the same thing. Turnover is the more common term in the UK.
Should marketing be measured on revenue?
Only with margin alongside it. Revenue per channel without margin encourages chasing the least profitable customers.
