What Is Segmentation? Sending Relevant Email to Fewer People
DICTIONARY · EMAIL

What Is Email Segmentation?

Segmentation is dividing an email audience into groups based on meaningful characteristics.

In plain English

The purpose is relevance. Sending a smaller, better-matched email produces more response than sending the same message to everyone, and it protects deliverability.

Most of the benefit comes from a handful of segments: customers versus prospects, engaged versus inactive, and whatever distinguishes your main audiences. Elaborate segmentation rarely earns its complexity.

What to know

By relationship
Customer, prospect, lapsed.
By engagement
Active subscribers should be treated differently from dormant ones.
By declared interest
What they told you they wanted.
Few segments
Three or four you actually send differently to.

Why it matters

Segmentation is the cheapest way to improve email results, because it requires no new content. The same email sent to the right half of the list outperforms it sent to everyone.

Common mistakes

×Building segments nobody sends differently to.
×Segmenting on data you do not reliably have.
×Too many segments to maintain.
×Sending everything to the whole list regardless.
