What Are SMART Goals?

SMART is a framework for writing goals that can actually be judged: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound.

In plain English

Its value is that it prevents the goal everyone recognises: grow the business, improve our marketing, increase brand awareness. None of those can be assessed, so none of them direct anything.

In practice two criteria get skipped. Achievable, because ambitious numbers sound better in a plan, and time-bound, because a deadline creates accountability.

What to know

Specific
What exactly, not a direction of travel.
Measurable
A number, from a source you already have.
Achievable
Ambitious and possible. Impossible goals get abandoned quietly.
Relevant and time-bound
Connected to the business objective, with a date.

Why it matters

The framework is a checklist rather than a method, and it does one useful thing: it makes a goal falsifiable. A goal you can fail is a goal that can direct work.

Common mistakes

×Setting a target with no baseline to measure from.
×Numbers chosen for ambition rather than plausibility.
×No date, so nothing is ever due.
×Applying the framework as a ritual to goals nobody intends to track.

FAQs

What makes a goal measurable?

An existing data source you already trust. A metric you would have to build first rarely gets measured.

How many goals should a plan have?

Few. Three real goals beat ten aspirations.
