What Is a Marketing Strategy? The Choices Behind the Activity
DICTIONARY · FUNDAMENTALS

What Is a Marketing Strategy?

A marketing strategy is the set of decisions about who you sell to, what you offer them, and why they should choose you.

In plain English

A strategy is a small number of decisions: which market, which segment, what position, what offer. It should fit on a page and be recallable without opening the document.

The test is whether it excludes anything. A strategy that serves everyone, competes on everything and declines nothing is a description of ambition, not a strategy.

What to know

Who
The market and the segment within it you are choosing to serve.
What
The offer, and how it differs from what is already available.
Why you
The position: the reason a buyer picks you over the alternatives.
What not
The customers, channels and features you are deliberately declining.

Why it matters

Strategy is where marketing either becomes coherent or stays a series of disconnected efforts. Once the choices are made, most tactical questions answer themselves, which is the practical benefit of having one.

Common mistakes

×Writing a plan of activity and calling it strategy.
×Refusing to exclude any customer segment.
×Copying a competitor's position rather than finding your own.
×Never revisiting it as the market changes.

FAQs

How is strategy different from a plan?

Strategy is the choices. The plan is the activity that follows from them.

How long should it be?

One page. If the team cannot recall it, it will not guide anything.
