In plain English
As a technical term it means the same as artificial intelligence. As a marketing term it now means almost nothing, because it is applied to anything from a language model to a sorting rule written in 2014.
The practical skill is translation. When a product says AI, the useful question is which task, trained on what, and what happens when it is wrong.
What to know
Why it matters
Being able to tell genuine capability from a relabelled if-statement saves money. It also protects credibility, because recommending a tool that turned out to be a spreadsheet with a chat window is expensive in a different way.
