What Is Brand Awareness? Being Known Before the Need
DICTIONARY · BRANDING

What Is Brand Awareness?

Brand awareness is the extent to which people recognise or remember a brand.

In plain English

It has two levels. Recognition is knowing you when they see your name; recall is thinking of you unprompted when the need arises. Recall is much harder and much more valuable.

Awareness matters because most purchases start from a shortlist that already exists. If you are not on it when the need appears, the comparison happens without you.

What to know

Recognition and recall
Prompted and unprompted. Recall is the higher bar.
Precedes the need
Built before anyone is buying.
Poorly measured by impressions
Delivery is not memory.
Best proxy is branded search
People searching your name over time.

Why it matters

Awareness is the reason acquisition costs differ between competitors selling the same thing. A known brand converts the same traffic at a higher rate, which is a compounding advantage.

Common mistakes

×Reporting impressions as awareness.
×Cutting awareness activity because it shows no attributed conversions.
×Building awareness with no way to capture the resulting demand.
×Expecting awareness activity to convert in the same month.

FAQs

How do I measure brand awareness?

Branded search volume and direct traffic over quarters. Surveys, if the budget allows.

Is awareness worth it for a small business?

In a defined local or niche market, yes. Being the known name is most of the sale.
