What Is Navigational Intent? Brand Queries and Who Owns Them
DICTIONARY · SEO

What Is Navigational Intent?

Navigational intent is a search where the person already knows where they want to go and is using search to get there.

In plain English

Typing a brand name, a product name or a login page is navigational. The searcher has decided; search is just the fastest route.

For your own name these are the most valuable queries on the site, because the person arrived already intending to deal with you. For someone else's name they are rarely worth chasing.

What to know

Own your own
Your brand queries should return your pages, your sitelinks and your correct information.
Watch for interception
Competitors and affiliates bidding on your name, or outranking you for your own product.
Comparison exception
Honest "X vs Y" pages can legitimately serve people searching a competitor while weighing options.
Track it
Branded search volume is one of the better proxies for whether marketing is working.

Why it matters

Growth in branded search is the clearest sign that the rest of your marketing is landing. It is also the traffic that converts best, which makes protecting it a higher priority than most people give it.

Common mistakes

×Assuming brand queries look after themselves.
×Letting an out-of-date directory listing outrank your own page for your own name.
×Writing thin comparison pages about competitors purely to catch their traffic.

FAQs

Should I bid on my own brand name?

Often yes, if competitors are, and if the ad protects a high-converting query cheaply.

Is branded traffic real SEO?

It is a result of marketing, and it is measurable. Report it separately so it does not flatter your unbranded numbers.
