In plain English
A CAPTCHA is the test in front of a form that tries to establish you are a person. Tick a box, identify some images, or nothing visible at all while a script scores your behaviour.
It exists because unprotected forms attract enormous volumes of automated spam. The trade is real, though. Every CAPTCHA adds friction, and some visitors fail or abandon.
What to know
Why it matters
Contact forms are the point where marketing spend turns into enquiries. Anything sitting in front of them deserves scrutiny. Puzzle-style CAPTCHAs measurably reduce completion, so if you can get the same protection invisibly, that is free conversion rate.
Common mistakes
FAQs
Does a CAPTCHA hurt conversion?
Visible ones do, sometimes substantially. Invisible scoring has minimal effect and is the sensible default.
What can I use instead?
Honeypot fields, submission rate limits and server-side validation stop most bot traffic without touching the visitor experience.
