What Is Community Management? The Unglamorous Half of Social
DICTIONARY · SOCIAL

What Is Community Management?

Community management is building and maintaining relationships with a social audience.

In plain English

It is the half of social media that is not publishing: replying, moderating, answering questions, handling complaints, and being present in conversations you did not start.

It is also where most of the actual value is, and it is usually the part with no allocated time. Publishing gets scheduled; replying gets fitted in.

What to know

Replying
Consistently, and reasonably quickly.
Moderating
Enforcing standards so the space stays usable.
Answering questions
Many of which are pre-sales enquiries.
Being present
In conversations across the platform, not only your own posts.

Why it matters

Social questions are frequently buying questions in disguise. A business that answers them within the hour converts people that a business replying next week does not.

Common mistakes

×Publishing on a schedule and replying whenever.
×Deleting criticism instead of answering it.
×No allocated time, so it happens inconsistently.
×Corporate register in a personal medium.

FAQs
