What Is a Content Pillar?

A content pillar is a major subject area around which content is organised.

In plain English

Pillars are the three or four subjects you intend to be genuinely known for. Everything you publish should sit under one of them, and anything that does not is a signal to reconsider.

Their value is concentration. Depth in a few subjects builds authority; breadth across many produces a site that ranks for nothing in particular.

What to know

Few
Three or four subjects, not a dozen.
Chosen deliberately
Where your expertise and customer questions overlap.
Each holds many pieces
A pillar needs enough content to be credible.
A filter
Ideas outside the pillars are declined.

Why it matters

Pillars are what convert publishing into positioning. Search engines and readers both reward evident depth, and depth is only possible if the subject range is narrow enough.

Common mistakes

×Too many pillars, so none get covered properly.
×Pillars based on internal interest rather than customer need.
×Publishing outside the pillars because an idea seemed good.
×Pillars with three articles each, which is not depth.

FAQs

How many content pillars should I have?

Three or four. More than that and you are publishing broadly, not building authority.

How much content does a pillar need?

Enough to cover the subject's real questions. Usually ten pieces or more.
