What Is Content Strategy? Deciding What Not to Make

What Is Content Strategy?

A content strategy is the plan governing what content you create, why, and for whom.

In plain English

It answers four things: who the content is for, what it needs to achieve, what subjects you will own, and what you will not cover. The last one is what makes it a strategy.

It also has to cover maintenance. Most content strategies plan production and ignore the fact that everything published becomes something to keep accurate.

What to know

Audience and purpose
Who it serves and what it should achieve.
Subject ownership
The topics you intend to be the best answer on.
Exclusions
What you will not write about.
Maintenance
Who keeps it accurate, and on what cycle.

Why it matters

Content without a strategy accumulates rather than compounds. Ten unrelated articles produce ten small results; ten articles covering one subject completely produce authority on it.

Common mistakes

×A publishing calendar presented as a strategy.
×No exclusions, so effort spreads thin.
×No maintenance plan, so the archive decays.
×Subjects chosen by internal interest rather than customer questions.

FAQs

Where does a content strategy start?

With the questions customers ask before buying. Those are the pages that matter.

How is it different from a content plan?

Strategy sets what and why. The plan sets when and who.
