What Is an Event Parameter? The Detail That Makes Events Useful

What Is an Event Parameter?

An event parameter is additional information describing an event.

In plain English

The event says something happened; the parameter says what. A purchase event with a value, currency and item name is analysable. The same event without them tells you only that a purchase occurred.

Parameters are also how custom dimensions get their data. Registering the ones you need is the step most setups skip.

What to know

Describes the event
Value, item, method, location.
Makes analysis possible
Events alone are counts.
Must be registered
To appear as custom dimensions.
Cardinality matters
High-variety parameters cause reporting problems.

Why it matters

An event without parameters can only ever be counted. Adding two or three relevant parameters is what turns a count into something you can segment and act on.

Common mistakes

×Purchase events without value or currency.
×Parameters sent but never registered as dimensions.
×Free-text parameters creating enormous cardinality.
×Inconsistent parameter names across events.

FAQs

Which parameters should I send?

Value and currency on anything commercial, plus whatever you would want to segment by.

Why is my parameter not in reports?

It probably needs registering as a custom dimension first.
